Don’t Be a Burglary Magnet: How Landscaping Can Help

Did you ever think about how your landscaping, can actually protect you and your family? How doing certain things around your home, can help deter burglars?  It is true, by following a few simple tips, you can help protect your home, and make it look better at the same time.  Landscaping is an important part of your home for many different reasons.  It is worth it to hire a landscaper to help you, and your family, keep thieves away.

Keeping your yard well maintained by having the grass mowed, and flower beds well maintained shows that there is someone living in the home, it is not vacated or unoccupied. It would make a thief move on to the next house, by seeing that someone is taking good care of the outside of the house.  Well maintained and landscaped homes show, that someone is around very often, and would notice things that are out of place.

In order to protect your home and family you need to have defensive landscaping.  Defensive landscaping is using plants to deter thieves.  There are a few things that you can do with plants and bushes to protect your home.

One of the first things you should do, is to remove any plants or bushes that could be hiding places.  If you have tall bushes lined up against the outside of your home, that can be a place where burglars can hide, and peek inside your windows.  They can also hide behind them to break or open a window. You should remove bushes that block windows. If you have hedges that run parallel with a fence, you should take them down.  They create hiding places for thieves.

The next thing that you should do is, make sure that you don’t have trees near your second floor windows.  Burglars can climb trees that lead to a window, and a tree can give easy access to an open, or unlocked window on the second floor.  Keep all trees away from your home, and by having the branches trimmed, it is a bonus to avoid any damage from storms with strong wind.

Another avenue that potential thieves can use to gain access to your home, are trellises.  While they may look nice, they can afford an easy access to an upstairs window.  Keep them away from the house.

Another tip for defensive landscaping is to use some plants to your advantage.  If you have a very tight hedge, it could deter someone from wanting to go through it.  An added bonus to that, is if the hedge plants have thorns.  Using bushes such as holly, bougainvillea, and roses can be a fantastic deterrent as they are painful to walk through.  The thorns, prickers and dangerous sap, could keep someone from going through them.  The giant thorns might persuade someone to go to an easier target.  Placing these around windows of your home, can help to keep you safe.
